It's a speaker amplifier so if the hardware started to go wrong it can
potentially cause substantial physical damage to the system, possibly
generating a lot of heat which can go very badly.  Any error here should
be a "this should never happen" kind of thing, if there's doubt it's
probably as well to err on the side of being loud.
